Measurement of soot mass and PAHs during the pyrolysis of C2C4 alcohols at high temperatures

Particulate matter (PM) is emitted from a range of combustion sources, can vary greatly in properties, and able to penetrate deep into the human lungs, conveying carcinogenic PAHs present on particle surface. Alcohol based biofuels have been shown potentially reduce PM emissions when displacing fossil fuels. To improve understanding influence fuel bound oxygen relative toxicity PM, this paper investigates quantitatively soot mass produced pyrolysis ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol,1-butanol, 2-butanol laminar flow reactor. The alcohol fuels collection soot-bound gas-phase PAH was carried out between 1323 1623 K at fixed carbon atom concentration nitrogen. Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) used extract gaseous species captured XAD resin, with speciation quantification undertaken using GCMS. Of primary alcohols, highest lowest masses were observed for 1-butanol ethanol respectively, while secondary alcohols generated more than corresponding alcohols. An effect hydroxyl group position total distribution gas particulate-bound phases within temperature 1423 K. At K, 1-propanol approximately three times phase (PP) 2-propanol. Amongst tested, level all C3 C4 equivalence factor decreased increasing temperature.
